Whew!! Another good party under our belts! On Thursday December 22nd we celebrated our 2nd annual Holiday Extravaganza!
We started with a tasty breakfast served by Santa's elves! We had blueberry and banana nut muffins (made by yours truly! AND they really were tasty, LOL) served with coffee, tea and hot chocolate.
We had a cookie & candy exchange:
We made treats for the dogs & cats at the local animal shelter (AWSOM):
We had a Christmas Tree photo booth:
And last, we celebrated the December birthdays with cake, coffee and music!
Thank you to each and every one of you who participated in our day of fun. Happy Holidays!! (And a special thank you to Pat Fogarty, Judy Griswinski & Verna Overpeck for helping with the photos for this blog post)

Travel Day -> Holiday Displays
The history of Christmas Lights:
The tradition of using small candles to light up the Christmas tree dates back to at least the middle of the XVIIth century. However, it took two centuries for the tradition to become widely established first in Germany and soon spreading to Eastern Europe.
Candles for the tree were glued with melted wax to a tree branch or attached by pins. Around 1890, candleholders were first used for Christmas candles. Between 1902 and 1914, small lanterns and glass balls to hold the candles started to be used.
In 1882, the first Christmas tree was lit by the use of electricity. Edward Johnson lighted up a Christmas tree in New York City with eighty small electric light bulb. It should be noted that Edward Johnson created the first string of electric Christmas lights that were then mass produced around 1890. By 1900, department stores started using the new Christmas lights for their Christmas displays.
Edward Johnson was one of Thomas Edison's muckers, an inventor who worked under the direction of Edison. Johnson became vice-president of Edison's electric company.

Cub Scout Pack 83
We were honored to have had a special visit from Cub Scout 83! The boys sang Christmas carols and played the piano for us. They are so talented (and adorable!). They even served us cookies, 'bug' juice and handed out ornaments that they made themselves. We look forward to having them back again!
Thanks for coming Cubs, we enjoyed your company very much!

Believe in Heroes
At 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month," a cease-fire came into effect that would end World War I. For this reason, the date is generally regarded as the end of "the war to end all wars." Eighty-three years later, on September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists hijacked and crashed four commercial airliners, killing thousands of Americans. The events of that day would inspire droves of brave men and women to answer the call to duty to enlist in our country's all-volunteer armed services.
All veterans face challenges as they return to society, and today's wounded warriors are meeting extraordinary obstacles. These include visible, physical injuries as well as invisible ones, like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our challenge goes beyond just raising awareness for veterans, but by addressing the real hurdles our warriors face as they return to civilian life.
Believe in Heroes™ is a Wounded Warrior Project™ initiative that calls on Americans to recognize the enormous sacrifices made by our newest generation of veterans and to honor the service of these individual over a two-month campaign leading up to Veterans Day. The Believe in Heroes campaign will provide the American public with an opportunity to show their support and appreciation of our veterans in their communities, and across the nation.

Back to School Party
The kids are going back to school, why shouldn't we!? Sue planned an afternoon of good food and educational challenges for us to enjoy. An old fashioned cafeteria lunch was provided:
We were given homework to get our brains going:
One of the 'students' even got in trouble with the teacher!
We played a couple rounds of 'Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader?'
Marie Counterman and Helen Sirola won!
After a competitive round of spelling
Helen Barnes won the spelling bee by successfully spelling the tie-breaker word - metamorphosis! The 2011 SFP Spelling Champ:

We played a couple rounds of 'Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader?'
Marie Counterman and Helen Sirola won!
After a competitive round of spelling
Helen Barnes won the spelling bee by successfully spelling the tie-breaker word - metamorphosis! The 2011 SFP Spelling Champ:

Talent Show & Tell
The 1st SFP Talent Show & Tell was a HUGE success!!! We had over 30 participants and 56 residence in attendance. Probably the BIGGEST turn-out we've ever had for an event! Upon arrival, residents were directed to the art area. We had over 12 artists put their talents on display! There were beautiful crafts of all kinds, stunning needlepoint, embroidery, knit & crochet projects. The original paitings by our very own residents really stole the show upon entrance, who knew we had SO MUCH TALENT under one roof!
Once we were all settled in and introductions complete, the food started to roll out of the kitchen:
As you can see, we had enough food to feed the entire room twice!
Then the real fun began......
14 participants provided some type of entertainment. We had a plant demonstration, a saxophone player, a singer, a dancer, story tellers, comedians, historical presentations, a pianist, a 9/11 tribute and even a firefighter!
THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH TO ALL OF THOSE THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE TALENT SHOW AND THOSE WHO HELPED CLEAN UP. I COULD NOT HAVE PULLED THIS OFF WITHOUT ALL OF YOUR ASSISTANCE ;)

Comedy!
40 Shirley Futch residents were entertained by some very talented & funny seniors. We made ice cream sundaes and enjoyed them while enjoying this fantastic group:

Here comes Peter Cotton Tail!
Look what Chad found at back this morning, a baby cottontail rabbit!
Of course Sue and I had to love him and squeeze him:
Did you know?
Rabbits leave their nest when they are only 5 inches or so long. At this stage they will be sniffing and nibbling at the plants around them and carrying their ears erect. They may seem too small and fragile to survive without their mothers – but they are not.
So we took little Peter Cottontail back outside near where he was found. He is staying basically where we left him so we're hoping his Momma comes back soon!

Travel Day -> Hawai'i
The word 'Hawaii' means 'small island' or 'homeland'.
“The Aloha State” became the 50th state in 1959, but the history of Hawaii goes back centuries earlier. Roughly 1,500 years ago, Polynesians from the Marquesas Islands first set foot on Hawaii's Big Island. With only the stars to guide them, they miraculously sailed over 2000 miles in canoes to migrate to the Islands.
In the 20th century, sugar and pineapple plantations fueled Hawaii's economy bringing an influx of Japanese, Chinese, Filipino and Portuguese immigrants. Lanai, under the leadership of James Dole, became known as the “Pineapple Island,” after becoming the world’s leading exporter of pineapple. This mix of immigrant ethnicity is what makes Hawaii’s population so diverse today.

Pearl Harbor, or Pu'uloa, is a lagoon harbor on the island of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi, west of Honolulu. Much of the harbor and surrounding lands is a United States Navy deep-water naval base. It is also the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan on December 7, 1941, brought the United States into World War II.

Author Elizabeth Letts talks about SFP on her website!
As most of you know, my husband runs a website for a community of writers which hosts semi-annual conferences in NYC. During their most recent conference I had the pleasure of speaking with published author Elizabeth Letts. Elizabeth is an extremely nice person and talented writer. She wrote The Eighty-Dollar Champion: Snowman, the Horse That Inspired a Nation and has a new book coming out in August.
Elizabeth and I talked about my job at SFP, we both LOVE senior citizens!, and as it turns out we both love animals - especially the need for animal rescue. Elizabeth wanted to write an article about my dog Romo and his rescue story. It's a wonderful story you need to check it out!

Father's Day Brunch
Chef Sue surely knows how to spoil the men at SFP!
She made scrambled eggs with fresh chives and sausage served with english muffins and garnished with pretty fruits!
Look at all the food!
Here are 'our' men enjoying the brunch:
We listened to oldies music, talked about our cars from long ago and even looked up the images on the Internet. We reminisced about those cars and the old days then the conversation turned to celebrity beauties! We brought their pictures up on the Internet and the men ogled their favorites.
It was a fun brunch and everyone left with a full-stomach and happy memories from the past.

Lighthouses of the United States
The United States has had approximately one thousand lights as well as light towers, range lights, and pier head lights. Michigan has the most lights of any state with over 150 past and present lights. (source: www.wikipedia.com)
Let's explore some of these light towers!
1. The ten tallest lighthouses in the United States
2. Eldred Rock Lighthouse, Alaska
3. Sandy Hook Lighthouse, New Jersey
Sandy Hook Lighthouse, Sandy Hook NJ (1764). The oldest light station is on Little Brewster Island in Boston, however the tower originally built in 1716 was destroyed by the British and rebuilt in 1784.
4. Lighthouse pictures from around the country
