Travel Day -> Florida

Florida is the southeasternmost U.S. state, with the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. It has hundreds of miles of beaches. The city of Miami is known for its Latin-American cultural influences and notable arts scene, as well as its nightlife, especially in upscale South Beach. Orlando is famed for theme parks, including Walt Disney World.

Abbreviation: FL

Capital: Tallahassee

Temperature: 81 degrees, sunny

Time: 1:15 pm

 Nickname: The Sunshine State

Population: 21.22 million (12.8 in PA)

Size: 65,758 sq miles (46,000 sq miles)

Statehood: March 3, 1845

State Flag:

On a white field emblazoned with a red X and the state seal, Florida's flag represents the land of sunshine, flowers, palm trees, rivers, and lakes. The seal features a brilliant sun, a cabbage palmetto tree, a steamboat sailing and a Native American Seminole woman scattering flowers.

State Motto:

"In God We Trust" was adopted by the Florida legislature as part of the state seal in 1868. This is also the motto of the United States and is a slight variation on Florida's first state motto, "In God is our Trust." In 2006, "In God We Trust" was officially designated in state statute as Florida's motto.

State Bird:

Northern Mockingbird
The common mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) is a superb songbird and mimic. Its own song has a pleasant lilting sound and is, at times, both varied and repetitive. Often, the mockingbird sings all night long, especially under bright springtime moonlight.

State Flower:
Orange Blossom

State Tree:

Sabal Palm
The sabal palm (Sabal palmetto) is the most widely distributed palm in Florida. It grows in almost any soil and has many uses, including food, medicine, and landscaping.

State Quarter:
Florida, admitted into the Union on March 3, 1845, themed the coin, Gateway to Discovery. The coin highlights the 16th-century Spanish galleon, an image of a space shuttle, and a strip of land with Sabal palm trees. President William J. Clinton was in office when this legislation was signed.
