Resident of the Month -> Norma Dutter

SUCCESS STORY

DATE: __7/31/08_SITE: _Shirley Futch Plaza_BY: _Sharlotte Giberson_

RESIDENT / PARTICIPANT NAME: ___Norma Dutter ______

Reason(s) participant came to the Computer Training Center (what was his/her goal?)

Norma was looking for something new to learn and to keep her busy.

Accomplishment(s) of the participant:

Norma had been coming to the computer room for a while but was having trouble maneuvering the mouse. I recently started a ‘by-appointment-only’, which allows the residents to have one-on-one time with me. Norma asked if signing up for that type of class would help her to get better with the mouse. I told Norma the only thing that would help was PRACTICE. Since that day Norma has been coming to the Computer Room everyday it is open. She has improved drastically and is much more confident and comfortable with the mouse.

Obstacles he/she had to overcome:

Norma’s biggest obstacle was mastering the mouse however she had not used a keyboard (typewriter!) in over 70 years. The computer keyboard was new to her and the layout of the keys hadn’t been seen or used in a very long time so she had to relearn the keyboard.

What difference has participation in the Computer Training Center made for him/her?

Norma has stated on several occasions that coming to the Computer Room keeps her brain busy and gives her something to look forward to. She is also in contact, via email, with family members that she usually only hears from with a phone call.

Ice Cream Social

What do you do when it's 90 degrees outside and very humid? Enjoy some ice cream with your friends!

Sue planned and organized a wonderful event that almost 50 of us got to enjoy. We had a very good turn out and everyone enjoyed their ice cream. We had vanilla, chocolate & marshmallow fudge swirl ice cream and lots of toppings to choose from. Chocolate & rainbow sprinkles, cherries, whipped cream, crushed cookies and chocolate!

We even got to take home our Sundae Glass! Look how pretty they are:

After enjoying our ice cream we turned down the lights and popped in a movie - "20th Century Flashbacks, The Homefront 1941-1945". It was neat to hear all of you talk about what you remember from the 40's.

KUDOS to Sue for a wonderful afternoon! And thanks again to Marie Counterman for helping with the pictures.

Futch Feud! Coming in August!!

In honor of HUD's eighth annual Neighborhood Networks Week we are going to play Futch Feud!

How to Play:

Arrive at the Community Room on Tuesday August 5th at 2:00 pm.

Futch Feud is based on the idea of the classic game show Family Feud.

The room will be divided into 2 teams. From those 2 teams we will pick a few people to act as spokes-people. Teams will provide the spokesperson with responses to the survey. The spokesperson will decide which response they feel is most appropriate to the survey question and give that as their answer.

3 wrong answers and your team loses the question giving the other team a chance to answer. First team to score 200 points WINS!

If this sounds like fun to you, complete the survey in your newsletter or respond to the poll at the right..

Sign-up sheets will be posted on each floor the week of July 15th.
