Resident of the Month -> Verna Overpeck

SUCCESS STORY

DATE: _10/31/07_________ SITE: _Shirley Futch Plaza______BY: _Sharlotte Giberson_

RESIDENT / PARTICIPANT NAME: __Verna Overpeck__________________

Reason(s) participant came to the Computer Training Center (what was his/her goal?)

Verna was simply interested in learning something new.

Accomplishment(s) of the participant:
Verna’s accomplishments are many. She sends/receives email regularly to family and friends. Verna keeps an updated list of all her medications in an MS Word document. When her meds change she updates and prints the list for her wallet, refrigerator and her doctors. Verna responds to her music and book clubs via their websites instead of sending the replies through the mail. She has also created many birthday, get well and various other cards. Her biggest accomplishment is the flyer that she created for a Christmas presentation we are having in December. The flyer was printed in color on Christmas paper and even has a photo of the signer on it. It turned out very nice. Verna is also an avid Bingo & Solitaire, which she plays on the computer.

Obstacles he/she had to overcome:

Not only did Verna not know how to use a computer she didn’t have any typing experience. Verna’s typing has improved so much that she is now confident enough to create her own cards, flyers, signs and brochures using Microsoft Word and PrintMaster Gold.

What difference has participation in the Computer Training Center made for him/her?

Confidence! Verna understands how the computer operates and had an opportunity to show it. She was working with a person over the phone regarding her Pension. The agent proceeded to blame the computer for the problem Verna was experiencing. Verna advised the rep that the computer only spits out what a human has entered in. Enough said! :)
