Resident of the Month -> Patricia Fogarty

Each month I am required to report on the activities and usage of the Computer Learning Center. In this report I am asked to provide a success story. Each month I am going to post the success stroy on here for all of us to read. This months success story is Pat Fogarty!

SUCCESS STORY

DATE: __6/30/08_ SITE: _Shirley Futch Plaza___BY: _Sharlotte Giberson___

RESIDENT / PARTICIPANT NAME: ___Patricia Fogarty___

Reason(s) participant came to the Computer Training Center (what was his/her goal?)
Pat wanted to be able to communicate with her children via email. She is also the Secretary to our TA association so she needed to learn Word to keep track of the minutes.

Accomplishment(s) of the participant:

Pat has mastered email, learned Word, can make cards as good as Hallmark, and play games on the Internet. She has accomplished all that she originally set out to do. Pat is extremely intuitive and ‘runs’ with any instruction I give her. She is extremely competent and I am still shocked at how easily she picks up on things. In our Learning Center we have 2 types of mice – traditional and top-ball. Many residents can only use 1 or the other – not Pat. She can sit at any computer without hardware complications.

Obstacles he/she had to overcome:
Just that she NEVER used a computer prior to her 1st visit in the computer room back in December.

What difference has participation in the Computer Training Center made for him/her?

Just a couple of weeks ago Pat said “no matter how bad I feel when I come down here, by the time I leave I feel so much better!”

She also sent me these kind words in an email:
“i am enjoying this class so much. i am having so much fun . you are such a good teacher and i enjoy the time spent with you.”

The most recent email from Pat:
“i am so enjoying the class. we are having so much fun. it is nice to be able to get together. you are such a great teacher. we all love so much. love pat”

Bookmarks

Today we made bookmarks. Too bad a couple people were finished and had left by the time I remembered to break out the camera. At least I got a few good pictures...

Using Microsoft Word we used text boxes to draw large, bookmark-sized boxes. Then we inserted a picture. Some used Google images (images.google.com) to locate pictures, others scanned in their own.

We put wording on our bookmarks and changed the font to our liking. Lastly, we chose coordinating card stock to print the bookmark on.

In true Sharlotte fashion we couldn't stop there. We laminated the bookmarks then enhanced them with a rivet and colorful ribbon.

They all turned out GREAT!

Shirley Futch Scrappers

On Wednesday June 4th Shirley Futch hosted its first Scrapbooking class! Click here for pictures: SFP Scrappers

The scrapbooking class is held every 1st & 3rd Wednesday of the month. Even if you missed the 1st class you can still join at any time!

Examples of Computer Scrapbooking

* Journaling (type out all your journaling on your computer if you feel you want this degree of uniformity to the text you are adding to your scrapbook pages).
* Create layouts (including clip art), print them out, apply to a scrapbook page and add photos.
* Use background patterns (like patterned papers you would add to scrapbook pages) to add to layout pages you print out.
* Clip art available on the net (can be used to accent the theme pages you are creating or in combination with other techniques such as chalking or to create die cuts and paper piercing).
* Find quotations, poetry, page titles or toppers online to use on your scrapbooking pages.

BREAKING NEWS!

Have you heard the news? The Computer Learning Center will be open 3 days a week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Be sure to check out the schedule to read the latest events, classes and happenings in the Computer Room.

Over the past several months the Computer Room has been jam-packed, which unfortunately resulted in some residents being turned away or having to shorten their time on the computer. Gail saw this happening and got approval to add Tuesdays to our schedule for 2008. Please come out and support the Computer Room and the additional time available!

Looking forward to seeing you 3 days a week!

Did you know that over 20% of the residents at Shirley Futch Plaza use the Computer Room? However, every single user is a woman! Where are the men? We have quite a few and I’m disappointed they’re not taking advantage of the FREE opportunity to learn how to use the computer.

Come on out guys, if the ladies can do it, SO CAN YOU!

I’d love to see the following residents in the Computer Room on Tuesday June 10th any time between 9:15 and 12:00!

George Hoffman Ben Valentinetti
James Perry Lowell Thomas
Angel Leon Larry Shook
Bob Napoli David Patikowski
Francisco Solis Jim DeLuca
Doug Hallas Alex Bonkowski
